International Hostel 'Balaclava' (Sevastopol)
Balaclava is an administrative district on the south-east of Sevastopol
(see map of Crimea and
Sevastopol >>>), the name of Balaclava in Turkish means "Fish
Nest" (Balyk-luv). Balaclava is located in a beautiful harbour, somewhat
resembling fjord in Norway.According to some scientists the description of
Balaclava harbour also resembles the description of 'listrigons' port' visited
by old Greek hero Odissey. Balaclava has everything - unique nature, mountains
Fiolent and Aya, romantic ruins of Genovese Chembalo fortress and misteriuos
ancient cathedrals, and, of course the Black Sea!
You have probably heard legends about treasuries of English fregat 'Black
Prince', that sank during the Crimea War in 1854. When you are in Balaclava,
you will be able to join historical-military hiking tours and try to find
some traces of that ship.
Balaclava hosts the biggest in former Soviet Union once super-secret (now
open) underwater submarines repair factory. The factory was built in 1956-1961
to provide repair facility and a shelter to more than 3000 people and 20
submarines in case of a nuclear war. Until 1993 the factory was also used
as storage of nuclear weapons. Now you can make a tour around this factory
for a couple of bucks.
Balaclava and Sevastopol is the best place to start exploring Crimea!

How to get to the hostel (...you can print out this part for your reference):
a) from Sevastopol train and bus station - take trolleybus or a minibus
(usually called 'topic' in Sevastopol or "marshrutka" in the rest of Ukraine)
No. 20,17, or minibus No. 25,26 until the stop "5th kilometer of Balaclava
road" (rus: "pjaty kilometr Balaclavskogo shosse")
b) From "5th kilometer of Balaclava road":
- take bus No. 98 until stop "Warszawa shop" (rus: "Magazin Warszawa" (the
district is called 'Kadykovka');
- or better take bus (minibus) No. 9 that goes every 10 minutes
until the stop "Kadykovka" (ask driver to stop) on a railway srossing, then
walk down the Shelkovichnaja str. until Warszawa shop. (10 min.). The hostel
is located one building from the Warszawa shop down the street of Drapushko
18 on the left-hand side.
